From SATs Tutor to Home Education Mentor: How Hannah Built a Business That Actually Aligned With Her Values

When Hannah first joined us, she thought she was going to run a GCSE maths programme. Six months later, she’d built something completely different — and far more aligned with who she actually is.

There’s a moment in almost every teacher’s journey where the thing you think you should do collides with the thing you actually want to do.

For Hannah Andres, that moment came right at the start of our programme — in the very first module.

“I was going to do a maths SATs programme,” she told me. “That’s what my head was telling me. Maths. Year 6. People will always buy that.”

She paused.

“But my heart wasn’t in it. And when I really looked at my values, I realised: I left teaching because I didn’t want to teach to tests anymore. So why would I build a business doing exactly that?”

Good question.

The pivot that changed everything

Hannah had spent over a decade in the classroom. Like so many teachers, she’d reached the point where she knew — with quiet certainty — that she needed to get out.

At the same time, she’d made the decision to home educate her daughter. And as she joined the home education groups and started navigating that world, she noticed something.

There was a huge need.

Parents were overwhelmed. Confused about the legal requirements. Unsure how to structure learning. Worried they were doing it wrong.

And Hannah — with ten years of teaching experience — realised she had exactly what they needed.

“I’ve got all these teacher skills,” she said. “Planning learning, writing reports, making education engaging. Why not pass that on to parents who are home educating and feeling lost?”

So that’s what she did.

What Hannah built

Hannah now runs a 12-week programme for home educating parents — particularly those who are new to it or considering making the leap.

She covers the practical stuff: how to write the reports you’re legally required to submit, how to plan learning that actually works, how to structure your days without losing your mind.

But she also focuses on something deeper: confidence.

“So many home ed parents are told they’re not doing enough,” Hannah explained. “That their kids won’t socialise. That they’re making a mistake. I wanted to be the person who helps them see that actually, they can do this — and they’re probably already doing better than they think.”

She runs regular workshops tackling the myths around home education. She’s launched a week-long challenge helping parents prepare for September. She’s built a community of people who finally feel like they know what to do next.

And she’s done it all while home educating her own daughter.

The home education market: what most people miss

If you’re a teacher or tutor watching the home education space and wondering whether there’s an opportunity there — there is.

But here’s what Hannah’s story teaches us: the opportunity isn’t necessarily in tutoring children.

It’s in supporting parents.

The home education community is growing. More families are choosing this path every year. And while some want traditional tutoring for their kids, many are looking for something different:

  • Guidance on how to actually do home education
  • Help with the legal and administrative side
  • Confidence that they’re on the right track
  • Community with other home educating families
  • Specialist support (SEN, specific subjects, exam prep)

Hannah spotted a gap and filled it — not with tutoring, but with mentoring, workshops, and a structured programme that gives parents clarity.

That’s not the only model. But it’s one that works.

“I probably would have given up”

When I asked Hannah to reflect on the past six months, she was honest.

“If I’m being truthful, with everything that happened — my dad was taken ill right after I joined — I probably would have given up. Gone back to supply teaching. Maybe part-time.”

She paused.

“And that would have been soul-destroying.”

Instead, she kept going. Slowly, yes. At her own pace. But she kept going.

“The programme gave me that belief that this is going to work,” she said. “I can see the progress. It’s slower than I wanted, but it’s happening. And I know now that I don’t have to undervalue myself to make money. People want to pay for this.”

That shift — from self-doubt to self-belief — is often the thing that makes the difference.

Not the strategy. Not the tech. The belief that you’re allowed to do this, and that it’s going to work.

What Hannah would say to you

I asked Hannah what she’d tell someone who was thinking about joining the programme but wasn’t sure if they were ready.

Her answer was immediate.

“You’re never going to be 100% ready. There’s never going to be a perfect time when everything’s lined up.”

She smiled.

“But if you keep doing the same things, you’ll get the same outcomes. Something has to change. And if you really want this — take the leap. I’m six months ahead of where I would have been. And I’m doing something I actually love.”

The real lesson from Hannah’s story

Hannah didn’t just build a business. She built the right business — one that aligned with her values, gave her flexibility as a home educating parent, and used her skills in a way that felt meaningful.

She could have pushed through with the maths SATs idea. It probably would have worked eventually.

But it would have felt like teaching to tests all over again. And she’d left the classroom precisely to escape that.

Instead, she gave herself permission to pivot. To do the thing she actually wanted to do. To slow down, get clear, and build something with intention.

That’s the bit that matters.
