About Us
We believe it takes an army of empowered teachers to affect real change in education.
And we believe that army won’t come from inside a system that’s burning people out.
It’ll come from educators who step away, build something of their own, and do it their way — with intention, with boundaries, and with their values intact.
That’s what The 2 Hour Tutor is here to support.
Ellie's Story
How this started
I built my first tuition business in 2009. I’d been a teacher for almost ten years and had zero sales or marketing experience. Honestly, the thought of selling made me feel physically sick.
I carried a lot of conditioning from teaching — the sense that whatever I did, it was never enough. Which made me feel like I wasn’t enough.
So when I started tutoring, I projected that onto my clients. I assumed everyone wanted cheap, pay-as-you-go tuition. I charged £30 an hour. I said yes to everyone. I cleaned my hallway before every session because students came to my house. It was stressful, scattered, and unsustainable.
I worked with a coach who told me to keep undercutting the competition. Stack up as many clients as I could. Compete on price. I hated every part of it — but I thought, he’s got more money than me, I should listen to him.
So I battled on. Went part-time in my teaching job. Tried to make it work.
Then everything changed.
The pivot
In 2012, my first baby arrived. I found myself at baby classes — swimming, yoga, music — and an idea started forming. Why wasn’t anyone teaching languages to babies?
People thought I was mad. But I did the research. Babies can distinguish between up to eight languages from the womb. That was incredible — and I had to share it.
I set up a baby music and language class. And then another. And then I built BilinguaSing into a multi-six-figure brand.
When the pandemic hit, everything moved online. And I realised: tutors had a unique opportunity to build something different. They just needed the business knowledge — and the right mindset — to make it work.
That’s when The 2 Hour Tutor was born.
The breakthrough
When I launched the programme, I sold out 10 spots in two weeks. I hadn’t even built it yet. I was stunned.
A teacher friend said something that changed how I saw everything:
“Ellie, you’re selling every day — you just don’t realise it. Every email, every post. You’re not pushing. You’re connecting. You show deep empathy for your audience. That’s all you need.”
She was right.
I’d been sitting on an approach that worked all along. Empathy. Connection. Being a specialist rather than a generalist. No hype. No pressure. Just understanding what people need and showing them you can help.
That’s what I teach now.
Our philosophy
We’re not here to lure teachers away from a sinking ship.
We’re here to show you there’s a different path — if you’re feeling stuck, stretched, or disillusioned with the system.
We believe:
Tutors are not “just teachers.” You’re developing the next generation. That matters. And it deserves to be valued properly.
One-to-one tuition often isn’t the answer. It can trap you in the same exhaustion you were trying to escape — just without the staff room.
Specialists outperform generalists. When you’re known for one thing, your marketing gets easier, your pricing gets stronger, and the right clients find you.
Empathy beats hustle. You don’t need to shout louder or undercut the competition. You need clarity about who you help and how — and the confidence to communicate it.
Sustainable businesses are built from the inside out. Mindset isn’t a bonus. It’s foundational.
A different kind of tuition business
We help tutors move from scattered 1:1 sessions to streamlined group programmes — with structure, leverage, and a clear message.
That means:
- Choosing one kind of student and one kind of problem to solve
- Designing a programme with a start, middle, and end — not open-ended hourly sessions
- Pricing for transformation, not time
- Marketing with clarity, so the right people find you
- Building something sustainable — that supports your life, not the other way around
This isn’t about working only two hours a week. It’s about working with intention.
Meet the team
A family business built on trust
The 2 Hour Tutor is led by a family team — each of us bringing something different, all of us committed to the same thing: helping tutors build businesses that actually work for them.
Ellie — Founder & Lead Coach
I’m the one who started all this — first as a teacher, then as a tutor, then as a business owner trying to figure it out the hard way.
I’ve built two education businesses from scratch. I’ve made all the mistakes. And I’ve learned that the answers usually aren’t outside of you — they’re already there. You just need help seeing them.
My focus is on guiding you through the whole journey: your niche, your programme, your pricing, your marketing. I’m the end-to-end person.
I believe in calm growth, ethical marketing, and building something you’re genuinely proud of.
I’m a mum of 3 (2 of whom are neurodivergent, as, I believe, am I!), a certified holistic coach, a yoga lover, and a bit addicted to personal development. Currently training to become a nutritional therapist too.
Terry
Terry — Mindset & Personal Development
I’m Ellie and Mel’s dad — former teacher turned business psychologist, and I’ve spent decades working in mindset coaching and personality profiling.
My role is to help you understand how you think, not just what to do. Most tutors don’t need more strategies. They need clarity about how they react under pressure, why they default to certain behaviours, and how to lead themselves as their business grows.
You’ll start your journey with a 1:1 personality profiling session with me. It’s how we get to know you — properly — so we can support you in a way that actually fits.
I focus on self-awareness, emotional regulation, decision-making, and sustainable confidence. Because you can’t scale a business if your mindset is still stuck in survival mode.
Mel
Mel — Strategy, Sales & Implementation
I’m Ellie’s sister — and I’ve been by her side since we co-founded BilinguaSing back in 2013.
I was a secondary Geography teacher for 12 years. Head of department, pastoral roles, all of it. I left teaching in 2013 to set up my first education business, and I’ve been helping teachers do the same ever since.
My real strength is helping tutors move from “this makes sense” to “I’m actually doing it.”
I support sales conversations, help you articulate your value, and translate big ideas into practical action. No pressure, no pushy tactics — just clarity and calm decision-making.
One thing I always say: you are a helper, not a seller. At no point should you be saying “buy, sell, here’s the price.” People need to know you, like you, and trust you first. That’s what I help you figure out.
I’m often the first person you’ll speak to when you’re considering working with us. I also host our free workshops — which are a great way to get a feel for how we think before you commit to anything.
